Living by the scriptures

And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. - Isa. 29:18.

I was reading Isaiah recently as I worked my way through the Old Testament Student Manual. The manual explained that one can be either spiritually or physically deaf or blind, or both.

I was one of those who was certainly spiritually blind and deaf. I did not believe in anything, and was not a Christian. I thought I was much too smart to fall for that "superstition." I exerted great energy in denying and rationalizing any promptings of the Spirit I felt. My heart was truly hard toward spiritual matters. I had made it that way on purpose.

My life changed forever when I felt the promptings of the Spirit as I read the Book of Mormon. When I finished reading, I prayed, and eventually received a testimony that the Book of Mormon was true. After more prayer came the testimony that Jesus Christ was the Savior of the world.

As I was reading the above verse in Isaiah, I knew that this prophecy had indeed come true. This spiritually deaf and blind person had indeed heard the words of the book, and could now see the truth "out of obscurity and darkness."

Tears came as I thought of how kind and generous Heavenly Father has been to me. I feel a deep gratitude, and a knowledge that I will never be able to repay Him for His love, kindness and long suffering towards me. - Riley Carpenter, Myersville, Md.
