In October 1834, the Prophet Joseph Smith wrote of making preparation for "the school for the Elders, wherein they might be more perfectly instructed in the great things of God, during the coming winter."
In 1948, writing an introduction to Joseph Smith's History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder B. H. Roberts noted: "The value of the educational movement in the Church by the establishment of a school for the Elders in Kirtland, cannot be fully appreciated even yet. It stands as a direct contradiction to the oft-repeated charges that Mormonism seeks to thrive through the ignorance of its devotees."
