Our 5-year-old daughter, Amy, had just discovered the wonder of earthworms. At first, she was very afraid of these wiggly creatures. She would try to pick them up, but would lose her nerve.
Then one morning, after a very heavy rain the night before, I looked out to find Amy carefully gathering all the earthworms that had strayed onto the sidewalk. Concerned that the worms would die on the warm concrete, she overcame her fear and picked up every one.Within a few minutes, she rushed into the house with a tissue box, empty of tissues, but full of at least 50 worms. I suggested that she relocate her "worm friends" to our garden.
How admirable is a child's tender heart. We should all posses the ability to recognize a need and act upon it.
