The world's largest barber shop quartet singing organization presented Tabernacle Choir director Jerold Ottley with an honorary life-time membership award July 6.
More than 10,000 members of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America and their guests came to Salt Lake City for the organization's 58th annual convention.After the final competition in Salt Lake's Delta Center, the award was presented to Brother Ottley. The message on the award, signed by the organization's president, Tim Hanrahan, read:
"In recognition of a lifetime of leadership and a commitment to musical excellence that has inspired millions through song, the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America confers upon Dr. Jerold Ottley the title of Honorary Life Member representing the dedicated men and women of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir."
The next day, one barber shop quartet, Acoustix, performed with the Tabernacle Choir during its Sunday morning broadcast. After the broadcast, the international chorus champions, Masters of Harmony, performed an additional program with the choir.
