This week in Church history

President George Albert Smith in July 1946 led a party of prominent Church leaders, historians and writers on a two-week trek over the trails of the Mormon Pioneers and other Church historical sites, the Church News reported July 20, 1946.

Accounts note that the 76-year-old Church leader seemed to gather more vigor and energy as each day progressed.

A number of centennial observances were held along the trail at points of interest where the prophet recalled "much of the romantic history of the Church in its early years."

Also during that time, President Gordon B. Hinckley, who was then a member of the General Sunday School Board, was sustained as a second counselor in the East Millcreek Stake presidency, the Church News reported in another article.

Quote from the past

"Your happiness consists of living the Gospel way. It gives strength of character, but more than that, it leads you up into that realm in which you can hear the whisperings of the Holy Spirit." - An address by President David O. McKay at the MIA general conference on June 9, 1946, in the Tabernacle.
