A variation of Relief Society was organized in Utah in February 1854 when 16 women responded to an exhortation by Brigham Young to form a society to make clothing for Indian women and children. This "Indian Relief Society" met until June, when the prophet encouraged such organizations in individual wards. Many remained organized to assist the poor within their wards and to help destitute handcart companies.
Relief Society was officially reorganized in 1866 by President Young.
