How did the Mormon pioneers view the relation between religious devotion and work?

Here's answer to week's question

The Mormon pioneers viewed work, such as digging canals, tending herds, cultivating crops, and constructing telegraph lines, railroads and factories as acts of religious devotion similar to prayer, worship and other strictly religious activities.
