On July 31, 1847, one week after the arrival of the pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley, a detachment of the Mormon Battalion erected an edifice for worship. What was this first public shelter?

A detachment of the Mormon Battalion, which had just arrived in the new settlement, built a bowery of pole and brush to accommodate worship services. In time, this bowery was superseded by a larger structure which became known as the Old Tabernacle, a forerunner to the present-day Tabernacle.
