Living by the scriptures

Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God. - D&C 88:119.

I have tried to live by this scripture for the last year and a half, in order to prepare our family for whatever may come. I have found that when we live in a house of order by being neat and clean, reading the scriptures and incorporating all these things into our daily lives, our lives run smoother.

When I first began, I decided that if I expected my family to incorporate this scripture into their own lives, I personally must set the example and show the way. I started by getting rid of excess items cluttering my home. Then my husband helped by building a food storage unit, and together we replaced carpeting in some parts of our home. As we have gradually replaced worn-out items and repaired others, we have found our home has begun to flourish as a house of order. We are all more willing to serve others as a result of our trying to abide by this scripture and we are striving harder to keep the other commandments as well.

We have a list of goals that we want to complete in our lifetimes. By living in a house of order, I know that we will do this in a timely fashion. We are here on earth for such a little time. If we have established a house of order, we all will be able to accomplish much in our time on earth. - Penny Gazewood, Beatty, Nev.
