First Quorum of the Seventy: Four sustained; quorum total now reaches 47

Three members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy and an area authority were sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy Saturday, April 5, bringing the total number in the First Quorum to 47.

Called to the First Quorum of the Seventy were:Gary J. Coleman, 55, first counselor in the Mexico South Area presidency. He was called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy June 6, 1992. Before his call as a General Authority, he was a mission president, mission president's counselor, stake president's counselor, high councilor, and bishop. He received a bachelor's degree from Washington State University and a master's degree and doctorate from BYU. He was a former associate director of the Institute of Religion in Ogden, Utah. He was born in Wenatchee, Wash., to Benton Joseph and Evalin Barrett Coleman, and is married to Judith England Coleman. They have six children.

John M. Madsen, 57, president of the Mexico North Area. He was called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy June 6, 1992. Before his call, he was a seminary and institute instructor, director of Melchizedek Priesthood MIA, and an associate professor at BYU. He has been a mission president, regional representative and a member of the Young Men General Board. He received a bachelor's degree from Washington State University, master's and doctorate from BYU. He was born in Washington, D.C., to Louis L. and Edith Louise Gundersen Madsen, and is married to Diane Dursteler Madsen. They have five children.

Wm. Rolfe Kerr, 61, first counselor in the North America Northwest Area Presidency. He was called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy April 6, 1996. He was formerly Utah commissioner of higher education, and had served as executive vice president of BYU, president of Dixie College, assistant to the president of Utah State University and associate dean of students at the University of Utah. He is a former mission president, Sunday School General Board member, stake president, high councilor, and bishop's counselor. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University and a doctorate from the University of Utah. He was born in Tremonton, Utah, to Clifton G. and Irene Pack Kerr. He and his wife, Janeil Raybould Kerr, are parents of six children.

Carl B. Pratt, 55, Quito, Ecuador, second counselor in the South America North Area presidency. He had been serving as an area authority. Previously, he was a regional representative, mission president, and bishop's counselor. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona and a juris doctorate from Arizona State University. He was an attorney for Kirton & McConkie and legal counsel for South America North Area presidency. He was born in Monterrey, Mexico, to C. Barton and LaVern Whetten Pratt. He and his wife, Karen Ann Yeoman Pratt, have eight children.
