Wherefore, I give unto them a commandment, saying thus: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy might, mind and strength; and in the name of Jesus Christ thou shalt serve him. — D&C 59:5.
A family member and I had been discussing the importance of tithing. We both agreed that it was an important commandment and that through tithe paying the windows of heaven truly open in surprising ways. Later, when alone and meditating about our conversation, I reflected upon how lightly some of us in the Church view the principle of tithing. Sometimes our views might cause us to miss many blessings.
I did not feel I was being prideful, as I know there are those who do not pay tithing, and yet diligently live commandments that constantly challenge me. I began to wonder. "Could it be that I am putting too much emphasis on the importance of tithing?"
My musings were interrupted with the above scripture coming to my remembrance quite forcefully. Equating this scripture with tithing startled me. How could this concept have escaped me for so many years? Obedience to a commandment is a worthy reason for tithe paying but now it was evident that I had missed something in my difficult journey towards perfection. I should pay tithing solely for the purpose of showing the Lord that I do love Him with my heart, might, mind and strength!
Paying tithing is not the same now. The way I keep other commandments has changed also because of this experience. In doing so, I feel a renewed appreciation for all the Lord has given and done for me.
I always knew He loved me but I can't help wonder if He could tell by my actions how much I love Him. Perhaps He can in the future. My heart, might, mind and strength are getting a good workout. — Wesley B. Morgan, Provo, Utah.
