George Albert Smith was called to the Quorum of the Twelve in 1903. He was the fourth generation of the Smith family to serve as a General Authority. At the time of his call, his father, John Henry Smith, was serving as an apostle. John Henry Smith was called as an apostle in 1880 and served in the Quorum of the Twelve until 1910 when he was called as second counselor in the First Presidency.
