And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and in his own house. - Matt. 13:57.
I taught seminary for four years, and I always carried my scriptures with me so I could use every spare moment to work on the next day's lesson. During that time I would often pick up my scriptures and ask my Heavenly Father for an answer to any problems I might have. As I flipped back and forth through the pages I often came up with a scripture that helped me.
On one of those occasions my older son wanted to do something I didn't feel he should. It was late at night and my husband was out of town. I was feeling weak and close to giving in to my son's wishes. Instead, I turned to my scriptures and asked my Father in Heaven to help me to know if I was right in not letting him go. When I read this scripture, I realized in a powerful way, I needed to be the mother even if it wasn't popular. He didn't go that night because as I read those words to him he felt the same spirit I was feeling.
When we read a scripture at a time when we need an answer from our Father in Heaven it is often more than just a powerful feeling. That night my Father in Heaven spoke to me through the scriptures. "You don't have to be popular, just do what is right."
I love the scriptures and they are powerful in helping us to seek answers to our problems.
