Malnourished pioneers, whose crops were being destroyed by crickets in May and June of 1848, welcomed the coming of the sea gulls.
The sea gulls arrived in time to save the remnant of newly planted crops, the main hope for survival for the pioneers who had experienced severe privation since the 1846 Nauvoo exodus. The 150th anniversary of the "Miracle of the Gulls," as it has been called, is a reminder of the faith of the pioneers, and a symbol of hope renewed.
