Wisdom not enough; important to hearken

"In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. . . .

"And Solomon said. . . ."And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

"And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

"Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad." (1 Kings 3:5-9.)

At the April 1990 general conference, Elder Spencer J. Condie of the Seventy said:

"Armed with the Spirit of the Lord, Solomon became God's instrument in building the holy temple for which Israel had hoped and prayed for many generations. But with the passage of time Solomon took him wives outside of Israel and his wives turned away his heart' and hedid evil in the sight of the Lord.' (1 Kings 11:3, 6.)

From Solomon we can learn that knowledge and wisdom alone do not qualify people to lead. Perhaps Jacob said it best: `To be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God.' (2 Ne. 9:29.)"
