This week in Church history

A new era in the Mutual Improvement Association opened in conjunction with the 1973 June Conference. The change to Priesthood MIA was explained in articles in the June 23 and June 30 Church News.

Presiding Bishop Victor L. Brown explained at the opening session: "Now, through inspiration from the Lord through his mouthpiece President Harold B. Lee, a most significant change has been brought about in this organization. The MIA is no longer auxiliary to the priesthood. It has now been brought directly under the umbrella of the priesthood. It is priesthood-oriented and priesthood-directed."

Details of the new Aaronic Priesthood MIA were unfolded through nine departmental sessions during the conference, the Church News reported.

Bishop Brown said in the second general session: "The purpose of the Aaronic Priesthood MIA is the same as the total purpose of the Church - to help our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in His great work which is `to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.' That is why the Church bears His name. We are members of His Church, and His work is our work."

Quote from the past

"Let us always remember that we are spirit children of God, and that God is interested in us and stands ready to answer our prayers and wants us to succeed." - President N. Eldon Tanner, first counselor in the First Presidency, from an address given during the June 1973 conference
