This week in Church history

President Harold B. Lee attended two performances of the Hill Cumorah Pageant during a visit to upstate New York in late July 1973, according to the Aug. 4, 1973, Church News.

The article quoted President Lee telling the congregation at a meeting Sunday morning, July 29: "On these hills there transpired some of the greatest events in the world's history. This is the place where the great dramatic events which brought about the restoration of the gospel took place. . . .

"[The pageant] has a tremendous impact upon our members as well as the people here. It is a great spectacle, of course, but bit by bit, the people are beginning to be curious to know what it's all about.

"That's our job, to tell our story to the world. This is one of the ways we can tell our story." President Lee also toured Church history sites in the area and spoke at a Saturday meeting of the pageant cast and in a sacrament meeting Sunday.

Quote from the past

"Life is a real challenge, but blessed with God-given powers, we can overcome every stratagem and obstacle Satan may place in our path." - Elder Delbert L. Stapley of the Quorum of the Twelve, from a address given during the October 1973 general conference
