This week in Church history

Churchwide services marked a rededication to Sunday School on Dec. 9, 1949, the centennial date of the first Sunday School.

The Dec. 7, 1949, Church News outlined the events that would cap a yearlong celebration of Sunday School.

It reported that "more than 50,000 officers and teachers of the Deseret Sunday School Union around the world will hold special rededication services to the ideals of Sunday School work."

As part of the ceremonies in Salt Lake City, a Centennial Box was filled and sealed, to be opened during the Sunday School's 150th anniversary in 1999. The box contained "hundreds of items of historical significance submitted by Sunday Schools from around the Church."

All of the proceedings of the "rededication" in Salt Lake City were filmed for later television broadcast.
