Edward W. Brooke, the first African-American elected to the U.S. Senate since Reconstruction.

Doris Day, a singer and actress. She wasn't at the ceremony.

Vartan Gregorian, scholar and historian, who headed the New York Public Library in the 1980s.

Gilbert M. Grosvenor, chairman of the National Geographic Society.

Pope John Paul II, supreme pontiff of the Catholic Church, who was presented his award June 4 at the Vatican.

Estee Lauder, a cosmetics pioneer. She died in April at age 97.

Rita Moreno, winner of Grammy, Tony, and Oscar awards.

Arnold Palmer, winner of 92 golf championships.

Arnall Patz, an ophthalmologist whose breakthrough work, particularly with children, has saved thousands from blindness.

Norman Podhoretz, an author and longtime editor of Commentary, the American Jewish Committee magazine.

Walter B. Wriston, former chairman of Citibank who oversaw the introduction of electronic banking technology. He was not present.
