PROVO, UTAH
For the next six months, Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock and several other Hollywood A-listers will be appearing daily at BYU’s Museum of Art.
Well, sort of.
To clarify, the authentic, in-the-flesh actors won’t be at the popular museum — but many of the costumes used in several of their most famous, respective movie roles will be on display.
The museum at the Church-owned school is hosting the traveling exhibition “CUT! Costume and the Cinema.” The free exhibit includes 40 costumes created for more than two dozen flicks by the London costume house Cosprop Ltd.
The sartorial display, according to the museum, takes in an entertaining look “at the art of making costumes that set the scene, establish character and provide authenticity in period films.”
“CUT! Costume and the Cinema” is evidence of the museum’s continued efforts to bring a wide variety of exhibitions to the BYU campus and its neighboring communities. Tens of thousands of people visited the Museum of Art in recent months to view the Christ-themed “Sacred Gifts.”
The films represented in the exhibition depict five centuries of history, drama, comedy, fantasy and adventure through the costumes worn by some of the most famous faces at the movies. Some 27 films are represented, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Sense and Sensibility, The Phantom of the Opera and Sherlock Holmes.
Cosprop, according to the museum, has become synonymous with prize-winning movie costumes — including several Academy Awards.
As an educational supplement to the show, the museum is also displaying art work from the museum’s permanent collection to demonstrate how wardrobe details were utilized in portraiture in many of the same ways used in today’s period films.
Located on BYU’s main campus, the Museum of Art is open Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m to 6 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Sunday.
