This summer members of the public are invited to visit the Church’s newly completed Sapporo Japan and Philadelphia Pennsylvania temples and the recently renovated Freiberg Germany Temple.
Sapporo Japan Temple
The First Presidency announced that the Sapporo Japan Temple open house will begin on Friday, July 8, and go through Saturday, July 23, except for the Sundays of July 10 and 17.
The temple will be dedicated in three sessions, 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 21. The dedication will be broadcast to Church meetinghouses in Japan. A cultural celebration will be held the night before, on Aug. 20.
Construction of the Sapporo Japan Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson on Oct. 3, 2009, during the Church’s semi-annual general conference.
Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple
The open house for the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple will begin Wednesday, Aug. 10, and conclude on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016. Tours of the temple will not be conducted on Sundays.
The temple will be dedicated in three sessions, 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18. Proceedings of the dedication will be broadcast to all LDS meetinghouses in Pennsylvania and in other areas of the temple district. A cultural celebration will be held the night before on Saturday, Sept. 17.
President Thomas S. Monson announced in the October 2008 general conference plans to build the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple.
Freiberg Germany Temple
The Freiberg Germany Temple has been renovated and is preparing for public tours. An open house will begin Friday, Aug. 12, and go through Saturday, Aug. 27, except for Sundays, Aug. 14 and 21.
The temple will be rededicated in three sessions, 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 4, and broadcast to Church meetinghouses in the temple district and other parts of Germany. A cultural celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 3.
The Freiberg Germany Temple originally opened in 1985.
Elder Thomas S. Monson, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, was instrumental in obtaining from the government of the German Democratic Republic permission to build the Freiberg Germany Temple. He broke ground and dedicated the site for the temple on April 23, 1983.
President Gordon B. Hinckley, then a counselor in the First Presidency, dedicated the temple on June 29, 1985, and, as President of the Church, rededicated it on Sept. 7, 2002, after it had undergone renovation.
The First Presidency announced on Dec. 16, 2014, that the Freiberg Germany Temple would be closed again for extensive renovation.
