Army Chaplain Vance P. Theodore of the Eatontown, N.J., Ward, and his assistant, Sp. 4 Dwayne L. Charlton, were recently honored as the 1987 outstanding unit ministry team by the U.S. Armed Forces Command at a ceremony here.

The award is dedicated to the memory of Chap. Troy G. Carter who died in a plane crash at Gander, Newfoundland, in December 1985. Carter had insisted that his chaplain assistant take his seat on an earlier departure flight.Theodore and Charlton received the honor for military skills, crisis intervention success and exceptional overall ministry at Fort Ord, Calif., and as part of the United Nation's Peacekeeping force in the Sinai. In 1986, the pair helped raise $22,000 in Christmas gifts and food for 700 soldiers and their families in the Fort Ord area.
