Choir sings in Russian for Soviet inspectors who attend rehearsal

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir prepared a special surprise for Soviets stationed in Utah to monitor U.S. compliance with the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty. At its Dec. 1 rehearsal, attended by six Soviet inspectors, the choir performed two songs in Russian.

"Praise Ye the Name of the Lord" in Russian has been in the choir's repertoire for years, but it took the group about 15 minutes at each rehearsal five or six weeks to learn "Have Mercy O Lord.""We've been exposed to some of the great Russian literature and find it to be very suitable for this choir," director Jerold D. Ottley told the inspectors during the evening.
