Opening session of general conference

  • A peaceful, serene feeling was prevalent as President Gordon B. Hinckley conducted the opening session of the 159th Semiannual General Conference of the Church.

Although later in the day a brisk wind sprang up, early conference-goers enjoyed clear, crisp weather as they patiently waited to enter the Tabernacle.Music for the session, provided by the Mormon Youth Chorus, contributed to the calm feeling. The chorus sang an array of hymns, plus a contemporary favorite, "Joy in the Morning."

President Ezra Taft Benson wiped tears from his eyes at the chorus' rendition of "I Believe in Christ." And he enthusiastically sang along with the chorus' closing hymn, "How Great Thou Art."

Elder Theodore M. Burton and Elder Jack H. Goaslind, both of the First Quorum of the Seventy, offered the invocation and benediction, respectively.
