Church supports call for schools to renew teaching of values

The Public Communications Department of the Church issued the following statement on June 19 in behalf of the Church:

"We heartily endorse the joint statement by the National Council of Catholic Bishops and the Synagogue Council of America, and unite our voice with theirs in calling for the improved teaching of moral values in public schools."While the home and religious organizations remain the most effective forums for teaching moral values, there is a significant role to be played by the schools. Since this nation was built on a foundation of moral principles, we agree with the two councils that a renewed effort to teach such principles in the public school system is vitally needed in contemporary society."
