Volunteers needed to be tour guides at Church museum

The Museum of Church History and Art has an immediate need for volunteers to serve as tour guides and in other volunteer programs.

"The success of our new exhibits, with the increased number of visitors to the museum, has placed new demands on our volunteers," said Ray Halls, museum educator. "We have openings for people with a variety of skills and interests in Church history, art, humanities, and education."He said several intensive training sessions will prepare volunteers to give museum tours, present gallery talks, and take Outreach programs to various groups. Classes begin soon and will include sessions on Church history, art, the museum's exhibits and collections, and group-tour teaching techniques.

Other volunteer needs in the museum include greeting and providing information for visitors at the museum's information desk, assisting in the museum gift shop, and working on behind-the-scenes projects of cataloging and doing inventory of the museum's large collection.

"Volunteer service in the museum has been a tremendous educational experience for me," said Doug Merrill, a volunteer tour guide. "Besides, it has been fun and uplifting, too."

Those interested in volunteer programs should call Ray Halls for more information at (801) 240-3584. The application deadline for the tour guide training program is Dec. 14. The museum is located at 45 N. West Temple in Salt Lake City.
