Herbert B. Maw, governor of Utah for two terms in the 1940s and a former member of the Sunday School and YMMIA general boards, died Nov. 17 at age 97.

In 1912, he entered the Army Air Corps, qualifying for pilot training. He was called with two others by the First Presidency to be the first LDS chaplains.He taught speech at the University of Utah, and was dean of men and a professor at the university. He served two terms as a Utah State senator, from 1933-41, with four years as Senate president. He served as governor from 1941-1949, and in 1945 and 1947, he was elected president of the National Governors Conference.
