Living by the scriptures

"And it came to pass that Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly, because of their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness; and also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God; yea, and they were all exceedingly sorrowful, even that they did murmur against the Lord." - 1 Ne. 16:20.

In 1989, I was in an accident that caused serious injury to my back and has left me in constant pain. Since then, many things have happened that have left me asking, "Where are you, Lord, when I need you?" Reading the Book of Mormon has given me great comfort.

One day, when things had been particularly bad, I found myself questioning my faith. The spirit led me to this scripture. Lehi and his family had been wandering in the wilderness and were wondering if they would ever find the end to their journeys. Then, as Nephi went out to hunt food for the group, he broke the last bow they had.

This scripture gave me the strength to continue with my life and face my problems. If a righteous man and prophet like Lehi can get discouraged, but still continue with his faithfulness and overcome his trials, so can I. Whenever I get discouraged, I read that scripture and am comforted to know that we all get discouraged sometimes. It is not wrong to get discouraged, but it is important to remember our Lord is watching over us and will help us overcome the trials if we maintain our faith.
