Three Ricks College athletes won championships at the National Junior College Athletic Association track and field finals at Odessa, Texas, in May.
Cheryln Barber of Egbert, Ontario, won the shot put championship with a put of 44 feet, 11 inches. Her personal best is 45-7. A member of the Barrie Ward, Brampton Ontario Stake, she also placed fourth in the javelin. Last year she was fourth in the shot put and fifth in the javelin at the national meet.Justin Garner claimed the decathlon championship for Ricks College with 6,754 points. He was first in the 1,500-meter run, and second in the 110-meter high hurdles and the high jump. He is a member of the Acequia 1st Ward, Rupert Idaho Stake, and served in the Ribeirao Preto Brazil Mission. He will compete for Idaho State University beginning this fall.
Kristin McQuade won the national title in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 10 inches. She also set a national heptathlon record in the high jump at 5-feet-111/2 and finished fourth overall in the heptathlon. Kristin, a member of the Casper 4th Ward, Casper Wyoming Stake, will return next year as a sophomore.
