New mission presidents

Eight new mission presidents have been called by the First Presidency. The mission presidents and their wives will begin their service about July 1. Their assignments will be announced later. The new mission presidents are:

  • Joel A. Flake, 50, Morgantown Ward, Fairmont West Virginia Stake; stake president; former high councilor, stake mission president, stake missionary, bishop, and missionary in the Argentina North Mission; Church Educational System coordinator; received bachelor's degree in education and master's degree in religious education from BYU, and doctorate in education from West Virginia University; born in Boise, Idaho, to Dennis E. and Carol Read Flake; married RaeAnn Emery, 11 children. She is a counselor in the Young Women presidency; former counselor in stake Primary presidency, Relief Society president, counselor in Primary presidency, Relief Society homemaking leader, nursery leader, Primary chorister, Sunday School teacher, and choir director; received bachelor's degree in music from BYU; born in Lewiston, Idaho, to Dan D. and Loraine Adamson Emery.- Leone J. Flosi, 54, Naperville 3rd Ward, Joliet Illinois Stake; stake mission president; former counselor in mission presidency, district president, bishop, and high priests group leader and assistant; president and CEO of Risk Reduction Consultants; received bachelor's degree in English and philosophy, and law degree from DePaul University; born in Pariana (Lucca) Italy, to Floro and Graziosa Berrettini Flosi; married Carol Jeanne Lund, three children. She is a seminary teacher; former stake Relief Society board member, Relief Society president and spiritual living teacher, Young Women president and Laurel adviser, Sunday School teacher; received bachelor's degree in elementary education from Kansas State Teachers College; born in Salt Lake City to Elmo Hall and Carroll Alberta Anderson Lund.
  • Paul A. Hanks, 57, Capitol Hill 2nd Ward, Salt Lake Stake; Sunday School teacher; former stake president and counselor, stake mission president, member of Mormon Tabernacle Choir, bishop, Seventies quorum president, Explorer adviser, choir director, instructor in Salt Lake Mission Home, and missionary in the Hawaii Mission; Church Educational System area director; received bachelor's degree in math and education, and master's degree in music from the University of Utah, and doctorate in education from University of Southern California; born in Salt Lake City to Lincoln Frame and Emma Fidkin Ashton Hanks; married Jean Palmer, six children. She is a Sunday School teacher; former hostess at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and Church Office Building, member of stake Primary board, member of stake Relief Society board, member of Mormon Tabernacle Choir, counselor in Relief Society presidency, counselor in Primary presidency, Primary in-service leader, and missionary in Ireland; received bachelor's degree in elementary education from BYU and attended the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City to Ezra Darrell and Leah Susannah Hinckley Palmer.
  • Steven D. Kohlert, 56, Cottonwood 5th Ward, Salt Lake Cottonwood Stake; ward mission leader; former stake president and counselor, high councilor, bishop and counselor, high priests group leader, elders quorum president, Young Men presidency and adviser, and missionary in the Gulf States Mission and Texas mission; senior vice president for Intermountain Health Care; received bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Utah and MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration; born in Salt Lake City to George Bross and Ruth Elizabeth Webb Kohlert; married Nance Merrill, four children. She is a stake missionary; former member of Young Women general board, stake Relief Society president, ward Relief Society president and teacher, Young Women presidency, organist, and choir director; received bachelor's degree in English and music, and master's degree and doctorate in social work from the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City to Charles Smith and Marian Elaine Maier Merrill.
  • David O. Maxfield, 55, Lake Ridge 11th Ward, Magna Utah East Stake; stake president; former stake president, high councilor, bishop, executive secretary, seventies quorum president and group leader; chief production management at Tooele Army Depot; born in Denver, Colo., to Melvin Ornell and Margaret Elizabeth Shinn Maxfield; married Ruleen Holder, four children. She is Relief Society spiritual living leader; former counselor in Young Women presidency, counselor in Relief Society presidency, and in-service leader; born in Murray, Utah, to Louis Carlisle and Marjorie Marsden Holder.
  • Merrill C. Oaks, 60, Pleasant View 3rd Ward, Provo Utah Sharon East Stake; stake president; former counselor in stake presidency, high councilor, bishop, financial clerk, Young Men president, and missionary in Canada Toronto Mission; ophthalmologist; received bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Utah, doctor of medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and attended Washington University of St. Louis; born in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Lloyd Eddress and Stella Harris Oaks; married Josephine Ann Christensen, nine children. She was Utah and national Young Mother of the Year representative in 1972; Relief Society homemaking leader and chorister; former stake Primary president, stake Relief Society counselor and board member, chairman of stake activities committee, Young Women president, Primary president and chorister; received bachelor's degree in elementary education from BYU; born in Provo, Utah, to McKay and Josephine Johnson Christensen.
  • Ronald A. Rasband, 44, Northridge Ward, Sandy Utah Crescent Stake; Sunday School teacher; former high councilor, bishop, branch president, Cubmaster, elders quorum president, tour guide on Temple Square, and missionary in the Eastern States Mission; president and chief operating officer for Huntsman Chemical Corporation; attended the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City to Rulon Hawkins and Verda Anderson Rasband; married Melanie Twitchell, five children. She is Young Women president; former counselor in Young Women presidency, counselor in Primary presidency, Cub den leader, chorister, Relief Society teacher, Primary teacher, nursery leader, and Sunday School teacher; attended the University of Utah; born in El Paso, Texas, to Blaine Exeter and Marilyn Woodbury Twitchell.
  • Terry J. Spallino, 46, Bountiful 25th Ward, Bountiful Utah South Stake; stake Young Men president; former high counselor, bishop, member of branch presidency, elders quorum president, Scoutmaster, Sunday School teacher, and missionary in Italy; director, international physical facilities for the Church; received associate degree in political science from Mt. Hood Community College and attended BYU and College of the Siskiyous; married Linda Jean Lunt, six children. She is Relief Society president; former stake Relief Society president, Primary president, Relief Society president, counselor in Young Women presidency, Primary teacher, Sunday School teacher, and Cub Scouts den leader; received bachelor's degree in home economics education from BYU; born in Lordsburg, N.M., to Broughton Kenneth and Eugenia Kemp Lunt.
