To aid gospel doctrine teachers and students in the Doctrine and Covenants and Church history course of study for 1997, the Church provides the following supplemental materials:
- The Doctrine and Covenants Class Member Study Guide: "This guide has been prepared to help you study the Doctrine and Covenants," the foreword in this booklet states. "It provides background information and questions to help you better understand the latter-day revelations that will be discussed each week in Gospel Doctrine class." Wards or branches should provide each gospel doctrine student with a copy of the study guide.- Our Heritage: A Brief History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: According to a recent letter from the First Presidency to General Authorities and priesthood leaders, this 160-page book "will help members throughout the world learn more about the history and heritage of the Church." The "Supplement for the Gospel Doctrine Teacher's Manual, Doctrine and Covenants" states that the book "emphasizes the spiritual heritage of all members and may be especially helpful to add interest to youth classes." Our Heritage, published in 1996, is available at the Salt Lake Distribution Center for $1. (Please see Nov. 2, 1996, Church News for more information on Our Heritage.)
- Truth Restored: This concise history of the Church, written by President Gordon B. Hinckley, was first published in 1979 and updated in 1996. It briefly reviews the restoration and organization of the Church and the administrations of Church presidents, explains the "Supplement for the Gospel Doctrine Teacher's Manual." Truth Restored is available at Church distribution centers for 75 cents.
- Doctrine and Covenants and Church History video presentations: Please see article on page 14.
- Meetinghouse library pictures and the Gospel Art Picture Kit: "Pictures can help class members and family members understand and become more interested in events from Church history," according to the "Supplement for the Gospel Doctrine Teacher's Manual." The Gospel Art Picture Kit is available at Church distribution centers for $12.75 with plastic container, and $9.50 without.
