Modesto, Calif.: Trek teaches joy, anguish

Youth from the Modesto California North Stake learned something of the joy and anguish of the Mormon Pioneers during a five-mile handcart trek June 21.

Some 350 youth, with dozens of leaders, split into 40 handcart "families," and trekked the Sierra Nevada foothills. In this trek re-enactment, the youth dressed in pioneer attire pulled handcart replicas and tried to simulate scenes from a pioneer trail, such as sickness and injury.
