Spotlight on historical sites: Peter Whitmer Farm Home

About 27 miles southeast of Hill Cumorah, in the Fayette Township (south of Waterloo), just off of Highway 96, visitors are able to see the site where the last portion of the Book of Mormon was translated and the Church was organized on April 6, 1830.

Missionaries say the Peter Whitmer Farm Home is not as well-known as the other Church historic sites in New York. Nevertheless, 17,346 people have visited the log home - a replica of the Whitmer farm house - through the middle of October of this year. Sister Sandra Smith, from West Jordan, Utah, said it is unfortunate that more people don't visit the site. "So many spiritual things happened here," she said. The reconstructed Whitmer farm home was built in 1980 as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the Church. Portions of general conference, on April 6, 1980, were telecast live from the New York site.
