Messages of inspiration from President Hinckley

Be true to the Lord

Be true to the Lord. He is your strength. He is your salvation. It is He who can bless you. It is He who desires to bless you. Look to Him for every gift and grace and blessing. Get on your knees and pray and stand on your feet and do His will and put your trust and faith in Him and God will bless you. I make that promise as His servant.

Come to know Heavenly Father

Come to know Father in Heaven. Say your prayers, my brothers and sisters. Get on your knees and pray to the God of Heaven, and He will hear and answer your prayers.

Convert retention

I plead with you . . . that you will put your arms around those who come into the Church and be friends to them and make them feel welcome and comfort them and we will see wonderful results. The Lord will bless you to aid in this great process of retention of converts. . . . Will you please accept that challenge to warm up and be friendly to every man, woman, and child who is baptized into the Church. It all depends on you.

Keep the faith

I see men and women, not many I'm grateful to say, who serve in the Church with valiance, who love the Lord apparently, and seek to do His work; then they're released from service and somehow they drift away, and fail to keep the faith. . . . Walk with integrity; in storm and sunshine, be faithful; in richness or in poverty, be faithful; in youth or old age, be faithful. This is the work of the Almighty. . . . God has spoken from the heavens in declaration of the truth of this, His work. And there is no voice greater than His voice. His Son has spoken to man upon the earth and declared His identity, His reality, His great and divine place in the scheme of His Father, as the Redeemer and the Savior of the world. And those truths will last as long as the earth lasts. Keep the faith in those great and sacred truths. . . . Hold out till the end and God will bless you and crown your days with sweetness, and peace, and love.

Love for the saints

I have gone back and forth in the authority of the holy apostleship among the Latter-day Saints and how I have come to love them. I don't care about the color of their skins. I don't care about the slant of their eyes. I don't care about the language they speak. I just care about their goodness, their faithfulness, their love of the Lord.

Marry within the Church

We ought to marry within the Church. Our lives will be richer and happier if we marry within the Church. . . . We will believe in the same things, we won't quarrel over doctrine, or anything of that kind.

Opposition to the Church

Opposition comes of misunderstanding. As we are able to give people an increased understanding of this Church, its motives, its history, its practices, its outlook, that opposition will fade, will take on a different color. There still may be opposition, but it won't be driving us out of Nauvoo, or driving us across Missouri in the snow, or things of that kind. It will be of a different kind and probably more sophisticated and difficult to meet in some circumstances.

Priesthood of God

What a blessing we have that every man . . . if he is a worthy member of this Church, has had hands laid upon his head and he has been ordained to that royal priesthood. Why is it royal? It is the priesthood of the King of Kings, of the Son of God, of the royal lineage, the Lord Jesus Christ. That priesthood which we hold is His priesthood. It is a royal priesthood and what a marvelous thing that is. I hope that every man who holds this priesthood will remind himself every day of what he has . . . .the authority to lay hands on the head of another who may be sick and call down the powers of heaven in his behalf — this marvelous and wonderful thing which we call the Melchizedek Priesthood.

Rear children in peace

Rear your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Isaiah said, "And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children." (Isaiah 54:13.) Do you want your children to have peace? Peace comes of righteousness. Peace comes of doing the right thing. . . . Rear your children in such a way that they will love you all the days of their lives.

Share the gospel by example

Bring people into the Church. Bring them in with love. Bring them in with kindness. Bring them in with the example of your lives. So live the gospel that they will see in you something of wonder and beauty and be encouraged to inquire, study the gospel, and join the Church.
