'There is not a work of greater importance'

During the October 1999 general conference, Elder H. Bruce Stucki of the Seventy shared the account of his daughter finding a lost baby sparrow and raising it. A great trust developed between the bird and the girl, and even after she released it back into the wild, it would respond to her beckoning whistle by flying into her hand and letting her feed it.

Elder Stucki related this to faith and trust in the Lord. "Do we respond to His beckoning call to serve and be at His hand?"

Elder Stucki quoted Moroni 7:33: "And Christ hath said: If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me."

Continuing, he quoted Matthew 28:19: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

"There is an urgent and important work to be done in all nations and amongst all people. There are many wonderful young men and women, senior sisters, and couples who have been called to serve and who have responded and are faithfully serving a mission for the Lord.

"There is a great need for many more missionaries, including couples, as President [Gordon B.] Hinckley in his Feb. 21, 1998, satellite broadcast said: 'With concerted effort, with recognition of the duty that falls upon each of us as members of the Church, and with sincere prayer to the Lord for help, we could double the number of convert baptisms.

" 'For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul.' (Doctrine and Covenants 4:4.)

"There is not a work of greater importance or of greater joy and reward that we could do at this time. The Savior, speaking through the Prophet Joseph Smith, said to John Whitmer: 'And now, behold, I say unto you, that the thing which will be of the most worth unto you will be to declare repentance unto this people, that you may bring souls unto me, that you may rest with them in the kingdom of my Father. Amen.' (Doctrine and Covenants 15:6.)

" . . . I believe our Heavenly Father and I trust Him, and when He reveals to us, speaking through our living prophet today, that we need to do more, and more of us need to become involved in the work of bringing souls unto Christ, then we need to step forward and say, 'Here am I; send me.' " (Isaiah 6:8.)
