New general presidencies for the Young Men and the Sunday School were announced during the Saturday afternoon session of the LDS General Conference.
Other leadership changes included the release of nine general authorities, the sustaining of three new Area Authority Seventies and the release of 24 Area Authority Seventies. Changes made earlier this year in the Presidency of the Seventy were also sustained by church members.
Elder F. Melvin Hammond of the First Quorum of the Seventy was sustained as the new general president of the Young Men, with Elder Glenn L. Pace as first counselor and Elder Spencer J. Condie as second counselor.
The outgoing Young Men's presidency included Elder Robert K. Dellenbach as president and counselors Elder Hammond and Elder John M. Madsen. The change was necessary because Elder Dellenbach has a new assignment in the Pacific Islands area presidency.
Elder Cecil O. Samuelson Jr. of the Presidency of the Seventy was sustained as the new general president of the Sunday School. His counselors are Elder John H. Groberg and Elder Richard J. Maynes.
The Sunday School presidency released included Elder Marlin K. Jensen, president, and counselors Elder Neil L. Andersen and Elder Groberg. Elder Jensen was released following his new assignment to the Europe Central Area Presidency.
Elder Charles Didier and Elder Samuelson have also succeeded Elder L. Aldin Porter and Elder Jensen as members of the Presidency of the Seventy. These changes were announced last June and the two men have been serving in the new capacities since August.
The Presidency of the Seventy has overall leadership responsibility for the five Quorums of the Seventy, now comprising 246 members worldwide, under the direction of the First Presidency.
Five members of the First Quorum of the Seventy were released as General Authorities and given emeritus status. Elder John K. Carmack, Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone, Elder L. Lionel Kendrick, Elder Rex D. Pinegar and Elder Porter received appreciation for their years of full-time church service.
Also released as General Authorities were four members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy: Elder Richard E. Cook, Elder Wayne M. Hancock, Elder Richard B. Wirthlin and Elder Ray H. Wood.
The three new Area Authority Seventies called were Carlos J. Garcia, 64, of Chino, Calif.; R. Randall Huff, 61, Altadena, Calif.; and John W. Yardley, 50, Panguitch.
Area Authority Seventies give voluntary church service in support of area presidencies within their assigned geographic areas.
