For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.
3 Nephi 11:29
Sometime ago in the course of my service as a full-time missionary, an incident transpired that would always remain indelible in my mind. I was in an apartment with three other missionaries.
As a routine, responsibilities were delegated. I felt I should have been consulted before the assignments were made. Consequently, I was miffed and brooded over the incident throughout the night about how I felt I was sidelined.
As a frail mortal, I decided to confront the parties involved, demand explanation and question the rationale behind the action. The following day we had our companionship study. We were studying the scriptures when we read from Third Nephi.
After reading, I couldn't help but pause for a moment. We deliberated on this passage of scripture and it was very soothing indeed. I felt ashamed for trying to put up a radical posture the day before. The Lord spoke to me point blank in an unequivocal term to rescind my intention and renounce any inkling to be contentious. I expressed the feelings I had to my companion and we bore witness of the wonderful way the Lord spoke to me and of the potency of the scriptures.
Any time I reflect on this exceptional event and the magnificent words directed to the Nephites, and its impact on me, I am always appreciative of the way the Lord helped me to avert an ugly scene.
