Supplies shipped for Chilean flood relief

At the request of the president of Chile, a DC-10 aircraft laden with relief materials from the Church left Salt Lake City for Chile June 12 in the wake of the worst flooding in 100 years.

The plane carried the equivalent of five 48-foot semi-truckloads of materials including blankets, hygiene kits and winter clothing.

Renn Patch of Church Welfare Services said the president of Chile, though stopping short of declaring a national emergency, did request help from a number of outside agencies; the Church was among those.

In Chile, some 100,000 people have been affected, with about 35,000 homes damaged. The homes of some 170 member families were damaged. Two Church meetinghouses received minor damage.
