M. Elmer Christensen, 99, former president of the Swiss Mission, died June 17, 2002, in Salt Lake City. A former regional representative and stake president, he was a member of the YMMIA general board, the Church Home Teaching Committee, chairman of the General Explorer Committee and a member of the National Boy Scouts of America Council.
Ralph William Evans, 99, former president of the Navajo-Zuni Mission, died June 30, 2002, in Salt Lake City. He served in the Northwestern States Mission as a young man and was a former case worker to the Navajo people for the state of Utah in Monument Valley and Navajo Mountain.
Larry Wayne "Turbo" Stewart, 30, a member of the 1997 Mormon Trail Re-enactment Wagon Train, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his home in Cantril, Iowa. During the trek, he was converted to the Church; on the day the wagon train entered Salt Lake Valley, July 22, 1997, he was baptized in a mill pond near the This Is the Place Monument by the late Elder Hugh W. Pinnock of the Quorum of Seventy.
Brother Stewart was en route to Iowa when he suffered serious head injuries on Aug. 2, 1997, while loading his covered wagon onto a flatbed truck; the injuries left him with permanent disabilities.
