Living by the scriptures

And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

Luke 1:45.

My husband and I had been married for 10 years and had been trying to adopt a child for over two years. From the beginning, we felt strongly impressed that our baby would be a boy from South America. We found the adoption process to be a spiritual and emotional roller coaster of experiences with financial challenges along the way. Yet the promise of finally receiving our baby kept us going.

Eventually, however, the days stretched into years and our families and close friends would often voice their lack of hope in our actually getting our baby and would even encourage us to look into other avenues of adoption.

The years and influence began to take their toll and I found myself melancholy and fighting an engulfing hopelessness. I started to arise early in the mornings and prayed fervently to Heavenly Father for the faith that I needed to remain hopeful. One particular morning after praying, I felt impressed to read my scriptures and came to this verse in Luke. Immediately, a sure knowledge and conviction filled my soul with joy. Nothing would ever make me doubt the Lord's guidance again. I felt I could wait as long as necessary, and that my husband and I could accomplish whatever the Lord required of us. I suddenly realized how mindful He was of us and how much He loved us.

Four months later we received pictures of the 12-month-old baby boy awaiting us in Colombia — our boy. Every day I thank Heavenly Father for the strength and fortification provided us through His word.
