Living by the scriptures

Whatsoever ye ask the Father in my name it shall be given unto you, that is expedient for you.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:64

My husband was working for the aerospace industry when the space shuttle Challenger exploded. Because of this catastrophe several people were laid off from their jobs; unfortunately, my husband was one of them. It was quite devastating for us as we were a one-income family.

We had always been active in the Church, but because of this experience it humbled us and brought us even closer to the Lord. One difficult thing for me, though, was being able to pray and ask the Lord to help my husband find another job. For some reason, I felt this was being too materialistic. Everyone was telling me it wasn't and that I needed to ask the Lord for help.

One night as I was getting ready for bed, I picked up my scriptures and thought to myself of how often I had heard people bear their testimonies and tell of how their scriptures had fallen open to a particular verse that had helped them with a problem they were having in their life. I then asked the Lord to please let these scriptures help me like they have helped others. My eyes fell on this scripture. I immediately looked in the dictionary to see what expedient meant and to my amazement it meant "useful."

"Of course," I thought to myself, "this is the answer I have searched for. A job is useful for our family; we need this."

This scripture always comes to mind whenever I have any doubts as to what is appropriate to pray for. The Lord is always there when we are humble and seeking the answers to our everyday problems. I am now among those who can stand and bear witness to the Lord answering our prayers through the scriptures.
