Youth help community 'fight back'

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Working with the City of Phoenix, more than 120 youth from the Tempe Arizona West Stake descended on the Homedale community in October to help kick off the neighborhood's 'Fight Back' program. The program is designed to allow residents in neglected areas to drive local improvements in an effort to stem increases in crime and decay.

To give the Homedale program a jump start, the youth spent two days during their fall break from school cleaning alleyways of debris, trimming overgrown trees and bushes, clearing vacant lots, and picking up trash from public areas. In addition to the general clean up, five homes belonging to elderly or handicapped individuals and single mothers received a fresh coat of exterior paint. Numerous other residents in the neighborhood were assisted with minor yard projects.
