This week in Church history

The value of the home and the Church were topics presented by President David O. McKay during his address at the dedication of a meetinghouse in Dallas, Texas, on April 26, 1953.

"The home is the best place in the world to teach the child his responsibilities, to give him happiness in self-control, and respect for the rights of others," President McKay said, as reported in the May 2, 1953, Church News. "Unhappiness in the child's life, as in the adult's life, springs largely from non-conformity to natural and social laws. The home is the best place in which to develop obedience which nature and society will later demand."

About the Church, President McKay said, "Upon the loyalty of the members and their desires rests the ability to uphold the standards and ideals of the Church. If they are right, say so. You do not need to apologize."
