Be still, and know that I am God . . . . Psalm 46:10
One day I was racing to our daughter's dentist appointment, which was 30 miles away.
The rushed feeling was familiar that summer as I took our three children to dentist, doctor and speech therapy appointments not to mention going to my own appointments after dropping the children off at Grandma's house. Even trying to arrive on time to their community classes seemed impossible.
At that frustrating moment, I heard our 6-year-old say from the back seat, "Oh, no, a red light!" She had made the connection and voiced it again. She knew that red lights slow you down, especially when you're in a hurry and, inevitably, they make you late.
This time, however, I began to contemplate her comment. The scripture, "Be still, and know that I am God . . ." came to my mind. It was then that I understood the importance of red lights and stop signs in our lives. I needed to slow down in this hurried life, even if that meant leaving a little earlier.
I realized that if we lived in towns and cities with only green lights and freeways, we would always be going too fast; we might not "be still" for even a moment to hear, with all of the confusion around us, the "still, small voice which whispereth" understanding and inspiration (Doctrine and Covenants 85:6).
I realized that as I slow my pace and enjoy the quiet, unrushed moments, I can experience additional peace. It seems there is a happy medium in life some green lights, and some red ones, too. That day I decided that I need to embrace the red lights.
