Former bishop dies on tour

COLOMBA, Guatemala — A former bishop from Ogden, Utah, was shot and killed Jan. 7 while traveling with a Book of Mormon tour group of Utahns through Guatemala.

Brett Richards, 52, died from a single gunshot wound after five bandits ambushed and boarded the group's tour bus near Colomba, about 125 miles west of Guatemala City.

A respected architect, Brother Richards was reportedly trying to prevent the robbers from beating the tour bus driver, Filiberto Rocas of Guatemala. Mr. Rocas was shot in the ankle. Eight of Brother Richards' family members, including his wife, Rebecca, were also on the tour but were not injured. No arrests had been made in connection with the slaying at press time. A team of U.S. FBI agents were sent to Guatemala to assist local police with the investigation.

Brother Richards was an active Church member, serving a full-time mission to Brazil and later as a bishop. Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at the Weber Heights Stake Center in Ogden.
