PERTH, Australa Elder Kenneth Johnson of the Seventy and president of the Church's Australia/New Zealand Area addressed a gathering of 340 religious, government and community leaders June 23.
The conference titled "The Family Standing Together, Standing Strong" was a direct result of the December 2003 resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, which designated 2004 as the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family.
Prior to the conference the Governor Lieutenant General John Sanderson hosted the speakers and the members of the organizing committee at the government house. In a brief speech at the reception, he gave praise for the initiative taken to hold such an important event to celebrate the importance of the family.
The conference, attended by leaders from many religious groups, was aimed to strengthen the family. Catholic Archbishop Peter Carnley was chairman of the conference.
Governor Sanderson gave a keynote address and was followed by other speakers from many faiths, including Fiona Wood, 2003 Western Australian of the Year; Rabbi David Freilich, Chief Rabbi of the Perth Hebrew Congregation; Elder Johnson; and Catholic Archbishop Barry Hickey. Joyce Piper of Doubleview Ward, Warwick Australia Stake, provided prelude music.
During his remarks, Elder Johnson talked about standing strong together as religious and community leaders of all faiths to protect the sacred family institution.
