PLANO, Texas A clothing exchange sponsored by the Relief Society of the Plano Texas Stake benefited members and others from throughout northern and east Texas and into Oklahoma. The two-day event, July 30-31, included the help of full-time missionaries who straightened racks and stacks of clothing, and held shopping bags for families as they sorted through items.
This was the third year for the clothing exchange, which includes each ward gathering and sorting items at a ward meetinghouse. However, the first year's turnout was so weak that stake Relief Society President Linda Crump put out large garage sale signs; within a few minutes people from the neighborhood began showing up. One woman, who spoke no English, picked out a few items of clothing, then asked where to pay. After she was told that no payment was necessary, with tearful thanks she picked out several more items for her family.
By the third year, word had spread throughout the region, bringing members and their neighbors to pick such items as clothing, shoes, purses, belts and backpacks. Items that remain once the doors close for the clothing exchange are donated to other charities in the area.
