Orchestra auditions

The Orchestra at Temple Square, conducted by Igor Gruppman, is accepting applications and audition recordings (tapes or CDs) from experienced musicians who play the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, trombone and tuba. Applications should be postmarked no later than October 31, 2004.

In addition to performing two or three concerts each year, the orchestra provides instrumental support for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Temple Square Chorale as they present concerts, broadcasts, recordings and special events. Musicians are selected from the Orchestra at Temple Square to provide instrumental support when the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is touring.

Candidates must be members of the Church in good standing, live within a 100-mile radius of the Tabernacle on Temple Square, and be willing to provide their service and talent on a voluntary basis. The Orchestra has no age guidelines as exist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The audition recording should contain two contrasting musical excerpts, usually one to demonstrate lyrical ability and the other showing technical skill. Generally, the complete recording should not exceed five minutes in length and may be accompanied or unaccompanied.

Detailed instructions and application forms are downloadable from, or may be obtained by mail by calling the Mormon Tabernacle Choir office at (801) 240-4150. Questions may be directed to the audition coordinators, Bob and Gloria Campbell at (801) 292-1226.
