SALEM, Ore. During the dedication of the "Walk of the Flags" on the Oregon Capitol grounds June 14, the flag for the State of Utah was dedicated to honor President Gordon B. Hinckley. It was sponsored by the four Latter-day Saints who serve in the Oregon House of Representatives.
Rep. Tom Butler (R-Ontario), member of the Ontario Oregon Stake, wanted to honor the service of President Hinckley. "With the historic growth of the Church, I felt it is was appropriate to recognize (him), especially in light of his worldwide travels, humanitarian and educational efforts. This simple statement will be seen by visitors who stop to read the plaque." He said perhaps it will bring some recognition to President Hinckley's great work.
The other sponsors are Rep. Dennis Richardson (R-Central Point) of the Central Point Oregon Stake, Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) of the Hermiston Oregon Stake and Rep. Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) of the Keizer Oregon Stake.
The Walk of the Flags, a project of the Oregon State Capitol Foundation, has every state represented in order of their admission to the Union. Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state on Feb. 14, 1859, and Utah, the 45th, was admitted on Jan. 4, 1896.
