Mental health awareness

FARMINGTON, Utah — Sharon Esther Speer of the Farmington 17th Ward, Farmington Utah North Stake, received the Sandy Brandt Volunteer Service Award from the National Mental Health Association. She was cited for her work in promoting mental health awareness throughout the state. She is an educator, an advocate in the state legislature, schools and public mental health agencies, and a former Miss Davis County. She has lobbied for better access to appropriate care, and has given suicide-prevention seminars to high school students. She also initiated a Mental Illness Awareness Week in Davis County.

The award is given to one person annually for extraordinary volunteer service and was presented to her June 9 during the association's annual conference in Washington, D.C.
